Five low-cost ways to improve your CQC rating

We often hear the same question from providers: “how do you improve your CQC rating without spending a fortune?”

The good news is that real progress does not usually depend on a big budget. More often, it comes from getting the basics right, using existing systems well, and making sure quality is properly evidenced. Here are five low-cost ways to strengthen your CQC position and go from Good to Outstanding.

  1. Get the basics right every time

Up-to-date care plans, accurate risk assessments, clear medicines records, and current policies are the foundation of a good service. If these documents do not match day-to-day practice, it becomes harder to demonstrate quality to CQC.

Small gaps in documentation can have a big impact. Even when care is excellent, inconsistent records can weaken the overall picture. Keeping everything accurate and aligned is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to improve your rating.

  1. Turn audits into action

Audits are only valuable if they lead to change. Too often, providers complete audits but do not follow them through with a clear action plan.

A short, practical action plan is usually enough, provided someone is responsible for it and progress is reviewed. This does not require extra spending, but it does show CQC that governance is active, not just recorded on paper.

  1. Involve your staff properly

Your staff already know where the pressures are and what would make the biggest difference. Involving them in improvement is one of the cheapest ways to raise quality.

Regular supervisions, team meetings, and open conversations can uncover practical ideas for improvement. Staff who feel listened to are also more likely to stay engaged, which helps with continuity, morale, and care quality.

  1. Make care truly person-centred

Outstanding care is often visible in the small things. Using someone’s preferred name, involving them in decisions, supporting them to personalise their room, or helping them plan meals can all make a real difference.

These actions show that the service sees the person, not just the task. That is exactly the kind of evidence CQC wants to see, and it usually costs very little to do well.

  1. Evidence the good work you already do

Many providers are already doing more than they realise. The challenge is making that visible.

If someone is building new skills, making progress with support, or receiving better outcomes because of positive planning, record it clearly in care plans, reviews and staff notes. CQC is looking for evidence of consistency, learning and improvement, so the better you evidence what happens in practice, the stronger your position will be.
