Nursing & Midwifery Council investigations – how we can help

If you are a nurse or midwife practising in the UK, Hempsons’ team of NMC defence lawyers for nurses and midwives can help if someone complains about you to the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).

Case Examiners

After conducting an initial screening of the complaint, if the NMC decides it should be investigated further, you will be invited to submit a letter of observations to the NMC’s Case Examiners. That letter of observations can have a significant impact on how the case unfolds, so contact us today and we can help you draft as strong a response as possible, with a view to bringing the investigation to an end without the need for a hearing.

Interim Orders hearings

At the start of the NMC’s investigation (or possibly at a later stage), you may be summoned at short notice to a hearing to decide whether or not, whilst the investigation is ongoing, restrictions should be imposed on your registration. Conditions of practice might be imposed, or you may be suspended from practice altogether, so the importance of being properly represented cannot be overestimated. Hempsons’ team of NMC defence solicitors has a wealth of experience of representing clients at such hearings and can help to minimise the likelihood of restrictions being imposed, so contact us today to ensure you have the advice and support you need.

Fitness to Practise hearings

If the Case Examiners decide it is necessary to do so, your case will be referred for a hearing before a Fitness to Practise Committee. That Committee will ultimately decide whether or not the allegations against you are true, whether your fitness to practise is impaired and, most importantly, whether or not to take action against your registration. The potential impact of the hearing is therefore considerable and it is important that you are ably-represented by skilled specialist NMC defence lawyers for nurses and midwives . Hempsons can provide that representation, both in preparing for the hearing and by working with high-quality barristers, to help secure you the best possible outcome at your hearing.
