This week in a showcase press conference (14 June), David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Andrew Lansley stood shoulder to shoulder informing us how much they have changed their proposals for the reform of the healthcare system as a result of the listening exercise.

But have things really changed? A closer read of the government’s changes in response to the NHS Future Forum recommendations reveals that, for GP Commissioning Consortia (GPCC) now rebranded as Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG), there are few really significant changes.

Liberating the NHS: The Journey Begins

 

The NHS is the most recognized and trusted brand in the UK.

It is therefore not surprising that the Secretary of State for Health received such a massive – and diverse – response to his white paper Equality and Excellence: Liberating the NHS following its release in July 2010. Since the Government has published the Health and Social Care Bill (19 January 2011), setting out the proposed changes to health service commissioning arrangements including, in particular, the introduction of GP Commissioning Consortia. 

Millions of stakeholders will be affected by the proposed reforms, each of whom has a personal interest in what is one of the nation’s most treasured assets – the National Health Service. 

With more than five years in waiting, Minister Andrew Lansley moved swiftly to announce unprecedented reform of the system following the May election.  But as the reality, scale and complexity of the reforms unfurl the health landscape continues to be blurred by the continuing economic pressures and the impact of the Comprehensive Spending Review.
