Criminal Investigation

Individuals may find themselves the subject of criminal investigations for a wide range of reasons.  These may, or may not, relate to practice, but are almost always serious.  Criminal investigations are likely to commence with a police interview under caution and may conclude that the police/Crown Prosecution Service decide to take no further action; the offer of a police caution; or progression to trial (usually in the Crown Court).  In the event of a police caution or conviction the matter will be reported to the GMC with a potential impact on the doctor’s registration.

It is vital that individuals obtain comprehensive advice on learning of a criminal investigation at an early stage. We can advise on taking the next steps forward in dealing with the prospect of a pending investigation and of any potential impact of a criminal investigation on your registration with the GMC.
