Client Name: University Hospital of South Manchester National Health Service Foundation Trust

Client Details: NHS Foundation Trust

This bespoke PPP comprises an 8-year agreement with Alliance Medical Limited to deliver a Cardiac MRI scanner to provide services to NHS and private patients.  This involved the fitting-out of the facility by Alliance Medical and shared (or finely delineated) maintenance responsibilities.  The long-term services agreement is supported by flexible lease arrangements.

A significant feature of the project is a profit share for the Foundation Trust (FT) of income generated from private patients.  The fact that the capital funding for the scanning equipment came from a locally-based charity and the facility is housed in a PFI-procured premises added further dimensions to the transaction.

The Projects Team handled the negotiations for the construction phase and the operation phase of the project to deliver a project that combines performance monitoring capacity for the FT with opportunities and incentives for the private sector service providers.  The deal was closed in January 2008.  The project is now operating successfully within a flexible and robust contractual framework.
