Newsflash: New European General Data Protection Regulation
25 May 2018 – mark the date!
The approved text of the new European General Data Protection Regulation has now been published (available here), and as a consequence, the new data protection laws will apply from 25 May 2018.
The existing Data Protection Act 1998 will be replaced by the European Regulation on that date and all those who work with personal data will need to ensure that their organisation is compliant with the new law by that date. The new law will make some significant changes to the previous law, including a strengthening of data subject rights, changes to the justifications for data processing, mandatory self reporting of significant data security breaches, much higher maximum financial penalties and an obligation to have a data protection officer within your organisation.
Hempsons will produce guidance and training to help you understand the coming changes in the law and ensure that you are fully prepared for the new regime. Our specialist information law team will be able to answer any questions you have about the new law.
